Have you and your friends ever wanted to perform your own cosplay dance?  Well, here's your chance!

Otakuthon will be holding a Ceremonies' Dance Competition, where teams of 4 to 8 participants will perform a dance of their own creation or one found in an anime or other popular media.  A video entry of the dance must be submitted to us before 11:59 pm on Saturday July 10th, 2010.  Competition judges will view the videos and then select the top two performances from the entries.

The first place team will then be invited to perform their dance routine on stage during the Opening Ceremonies on Friday August 13th, 2010.  The second place team will perform their dance routine for the Closing Ceremonies on Sunday August 15th, 2010.  Also, both the first and second place groups will receive free weekend memberships for each participant of the group and a wonderful prize package!

For those teams who do not win, this does not necessary mean that all your hard work will be in vain.  Your team could have a second chance of showing off your dance routine by choosing to enter our Cosplay Dance Off that will be held during the convention.

Competition Rules

  1. Each team must have a minimum of 4 participants and no more than 8.
  2. The participants must be in a themed cosplay. They may be characters from the same anime or various characters from different anime as long as the cosplayers share a theme (such as an all main character group or an all main villain group). We highly encourage you to develop original dances and group themes to match with your song choices.
  3. All song choices and dances should be rated PG. No excessive profanity or adult subject matter in your song choices. The song should only be in Japanese (anime, J-Pop, video games, etc).
  4. Points will be awarded for originality of the cosplay group theme and overall dance performance. Teams will be judged primarily on the quality of their dances rather than their costumes. However, there will also be points awarded for the originality and the quality of the costume.
  5. All dances must be a minimum of 1 minute 30 seconds and up to a maximum of 3 minutes.
  6. Only one entry per team will be accepted.  Multiple entries will not be accepted.

Entry Information

All entries must be recorded on video.  The video must show all the participants dancing as a group throughout the entire duration of the video.  No close-ups or cutaways on a specific dancer are allowed.  The judges must be able to see the entire group dancing throughout the entire video.  The song should also be audible in the background.

Participants are required to be in, at the very least, partial cosplay in the video. Judges must be able to recognize the character that is cosplayed. Participants must be in complete cosplay when they perform the dance on stage.

Either the video or a link to where the video can be downloaded must be sent by e-mail to ceremoniescompetition@otakuthon.com with the subject line: "Ceremonies Dance Entry ".  The e-mail must also contain the full names of each participant and what character the participant is cosplaying as.  There should also be full contact information (e-mail, phone number, etc.) for one person on the team.

Please do not forget that each member needs to be pre-registered before the convention and provide us with their registration number in order to qualify for the competition.

All competition entries must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Saturday July 10th, 2010.

Once submitted, an email confirmation will be sent to inform you of your entry's status.

Entry to the Ceremonies' Dance Competition does not guarantee free weekend memberships.  Only the winning entries will receive the free memberships.  Participants should still pre-register as usual.

Winners must bring an audio CD with their song as the only track on the CD.

Although teams may register their entry in both the Ceremonies' Dance Competition and the Cosplay Dance Off, the first and second place winners of the Ceremonies' Dance Competition will not be eligible to compete in the Cosplay Dance Off.

Any entry that does not follow all of the rules or is submitted after the deadline date will be rejected.

For any questions about the competition, please e-mail ceremoniescompetition@otakuthon.com

Otakuthon would like to wish all entrants good luck and we hope to see you this summer!
