Masquerade Rules

What is a Masquerade?

The Otakuthon Masquerade is an amateur costuming competition for anime, manga and gaming-related costumes as well as costumes inspired by such works. It is an opportunity to see cosplayers show off their superb costumes, craftsmanship and creativity.

Two types of entries are presented: skits and walk-ons.

  • Skits are short theatrical performances of up to one minute in length in which participants wear costumes and perform a skit based on their favorite anime or manga. These presentations may be funny or serious, parody or action and may use characters from one or many shows, but they are always creative and entertaining.
  • Walk-ons do not perform skits but come out on stage to show their superb costumes like in a fashion show. These presentations allow fans to see the work of cosplayers who are great craftsmen but are less interested in writing and acting.

To recognize the work of these cosplayers, awards will be given out to the best performances and costumes.

How Do I Participate?

To participate in the Masquerade:

  1. Please read the Masquerade rules
  2. Otakuthon has separated the Masquerade registration process into two parts in order to speed it up:
    • Step One – Advanced Data collection form: Entry details - title of skit, division, what the MC should read, etc.
    • Step Two - Agreement to Masquerade Rules - signatures from all group members indicating agreement to the Masquerade rules.
This Google Form allows you to complete Step One of the process. Once you have completed the Google Form, you still need to drop off a signed agreement to the rules (a link to the form will be sent with a confirmation email, or in paper at the convention) during registration hours (Friday August 3 from 3PM to 5PM or until 40 entries are signed up, and Saturday August 4 from 9Am to 11AM or until 80 entries in total have signed up for the masquerade) at the Masquerade registration table (Hall Viger, near the Metro station).

Please note that you will not be officially registered until we have received and reviewed your signed form. At that time, your digital submission will be verified by the Masquerade registration staff.

This will speed up registration process both for the participants and the staff. However, completing the Advanced Data Collection form DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU A SPOT ON THE MASQUERADE. You are still asked to show up for on-site registration.
  3. On-site registration and submission of MP3 audio files at the Masquerade Registration Desk will be opened on the following dates: Friday, August 3, 2018 from 3PM to 5PM (only 40 entries will be available) and Saturday, August 4, 2018, between 9AM to 11AM or until the total maximum of 80 entries has been reached. The Registration Desk will be in the Viger Hall, close to the escalator towards the ‘Place D’Armes’ subway entrance.
  4. There will only be a total of 80 entry slots, so be sure to arrive early!
  5. Only MP3 files on USB key will be accepted. This cannot be stressed enough. No files on phones or CDs will be accepted, and we do NOT have a music library to choose your music from. Be prepared to submit your file AT THE REGISTRATION ON FRIDAY OR SATURDAY, or when you complete the Advanced Data Collection form.
  6. You must report to the Masquerade Green Room by 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 4 in room 230B. Please note that you will not be able to leave the Green Room after that time. It is therefore strongly recommended that you get something to eat beforehand.
    • You must be ready to go on stage when you arrive at the Green Room, as your costume will be judged before going on stage.

Note: Very large costumes that cannot pass through a standard door frame will be refused, unfortunately, as they will not be able to reach the theater backstage and therefore the area used for the competition.

Awards Ceremony

The Masquerade Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, August 5th, 2018, at 12PM in room 571A.
