J-Music in Motion

Have you ever wanted to see great singing and great dancing fused together to create one awesome performance? That is what J-Music in Motion is all about. This show/concert focuses on choreography and harmonies that can only be pulled off through teamwork. Want to show that you can sing and dance? Or combine your singing skills with a friend's dancing skills? Whatever the group combination, come show off your talents at J-Music in Motion!

 We're looking for singers and dancers who can take up the stage and show us their passion for Japanese music! Think you got what it takes? Then check all the audition details here!

Rules and Regulations for Participants

General Information

  • Groups must have a minimum of 3 members and up to a maximum of 8 members.
  • Groups must have at least 1 singer and 2 backup dancers.
  • Solo auditions are not permitted.
  • Groups must sing and dance in their performance number.
  • The performance number should have a theme that is related to Japanese culture (i.e.: anime, manga, J-dramas, video games, etc.)
  • Your group must be available on Friday August 13th, 2010 for sound check and practice. A dress rehearsal will also be done on this day.
  • You will need to bring an audio CD with your song on it when you perform on stage (one audio track per song per CD).

All groups that are accepted will receive free weekend memberships for the convention.

Audition Information

  • Each group must prepare two performance numbers for the auditions. This will give you a better chance of making it into the show and help us balance out the show by being able to choose from a wider variety of performances.
  • For the auditions, your group must perform the first half of each song.
  • Songs may be either in Japanese or related to Japanese culture (i.e.: related songs in English or French are permitted). English and French covers of existing Japanese songs are also accepted, however, singing in Japanese is preferred.
  • Singers must have their lyrics memorized.
  • No vocal rips are accepted. Only official karaoke or instrumental tracks will be accepted.

Audition forms must be emailed to jmusic@otakuthon.com by Friday June 4th, 2010 before 11:59pm.

Live Audition

Date: Sunday, June 13th, 2010
Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm*
Room: H-110 Auditorium H-429
Place: Concordia University
Henry F. Hall Building
1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. West, Montreal, QC

  • This audition will operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please plan your time carefully as the audition will not continue past 4pm.
  • Items to bring to the live audition:
    • A print out of your audition form (must have been submitted by June 4th)
    • A USB key with your audition music on it (we will need the song on an audio CD for the actual show).
    • Water bottle(s) (for singers, use it as a mic!)
    • Your suggestions (if any)
  • Please note that your group will be filmed during the audition.
  • For safety reasons, please do not bring any props or costumes to the live audition.

Video/Online Audition

  • If your group can't make it to the live audition, please send us a video submission at jmusic@otakuthon.com.
  • The online audition is only for groups that live outside the Montreal metropolitan area, (i.e. in another city).  Local groups must participate in the live audition at Concordia University on June 13th, 2010.
  • The video must show all the participants performing as a group throughout the entire duration of the video.  No close-ups or cutaways on a specific member are allowed.  The audition judges must be able to see the entire group dancing at all times.
  • DO NOT attach the audition video to the actual e-mail. Please provide an online download or YouTube link.
  • The download link (Megaupload, Mediafire, etc) or YouTube link must be e-mailed to us by Sunday June 13th before 11:59pm Saturday July 3rd before 11:59pm.
  • Please let us know on your audition forms if you will be auditioning via video.
  • No costs or expenses (including food, lodging, transport) related to the show will be reimbursed by Otakuthon.  Groups which are accepted will receive free weekend memberships to the convention.

Rules and Regulations for Hosts

We are looking for people who are Bilingual Dynamic Creative Energetic FUNNY Original charismatic & Responsible to host Otakuthon's upcoming J-Music in Motion! 

An open audition for hosts will take place on Sunday June 13th, 2010.  Auditions will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at:

Concordia University
Henry F. Hall Building
1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. West, Montreal, QC

In order to qualify, you will need to prepare a short text, with a minimum duration of 1 minute up to a maximum duration of 3 minutes, in which you will present an artist or an act! Please remember that the acts will feature words, song titles, and artists in Japanese, so please don't forget to include some in your text! Please also be prepared to speak fluently in both French and English.

Heard about this a little too late and don't have any text at hand? Can't think of what to write? Don't worry! Our team will supply you with a pre-written text!

Have a friend you want to host with? No problem! You can audition as a duo! For groups larger than two, please notify us at jmusic@otakuthon.com.

You will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Fluency in French
  • Fluency in English
  • Creativity
  • Memorization
  • Charisma
